There are 56 million more people around the world traveling long-haul today than in 2000. Not only did the United States fail to capture any of these new travelers, we lost 634,000 overseas visitors. (In 2000, 149.2 million people traveled long-haul, including the 26 million who came to the U.S. In 2008, 205.5 million people traveled long-haul, 25.3 million of whom came to the United States.)

Global overseas travel grew 38% between 2000 and 2008, while overseas travel to the U.S. declined by 2%.
Many of America's key markets show the same trend.

Global "overseas travel" is travel between continents but may not necessarily involve crossing an ocean.
