Air Travel System
Overview
America's air travel system is in crisis. In response to soaring fuel prices and unprecedented air-space congestion, airlines are raising rates, cutting capacity, slowing flights, and reducing staff. These challenges will follow on the heels of the delays and hassles that have cost the nation almost $27 billion in the past year alone.
TIA is actively engaged on this issue, which is negatively affecting millions of travelers and travel-related businesses. In addition to commissioning a survey that quantified the economic impact of air travel delays and hassles, TIA's President and CEO recently testified before Congress about the impact of these issues on small businesses.
These issues are crucial to American taxpayers, travelers, and businesses, and TIA will continue to advocate on behalf of the entire travel community to help find a solution to this travel crisis.

Facts & Figures
- One out of every four domestic flights was late in 2007.
- Airline flights are slower today than at any time in the past twenty years due to the inefficient air traffic control system and efforts to save fuel. In fact, transcontinental flights can take almost ninety minutes longer now than twenty years ago (even excluding any delays on the ground).
- The navigation systems in many cars today are more advanced than the system used to guide American airliners.
